we used to run a Peavey 3500 amp into 4x hisys passive speakers.

then we discovered Mackie Powered speakers. More power, less to carry.

We personally prefer powered. Also if one goes down you can carry on with 3 (or 5   ), with the old system if our amp blew - end of show.

we now run 2x Mackie XT bass bins, 2x w-audio 15", 2x Mackie 450's.

loadsa powwwwwweeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Been using samson 15" 500w powered tops & 500w powered bin when needed .used mostly the tops on their own we have found them plenty powerful but very wooly and bassy even with eq,ing, also very heavy 5kg heavier than the mackies, it takes two people to put on stand.we wanted lighter speakers... so went back to unpowered. Now using a passive hk audio system 12" tops weigh only 13kg and 15" subs come in at 38kg but they are on wheels.we have slightly less power but the clear clarity of the hk gear really is top notch and has made up for the loss.we drive with a w-audio amp which seems quite good for the price.we also went back to using passive monitors, our old EV S200 tops are very light and well up to the job,run off of one side of a yamaha amp leaving the other side spare for emergencys...rarely had an amp go down and then not both sides at once.Ran some hysys 4,s in an old band really good but you needed a sack barrow to get them about !
